NACHES, Wash. -- The Whitworth men were resting and the Whitworth women took a wrong turn on Saturday at the Apple Ridge Run Invitational hosted by Central Washington University, leading to a sweep of the two-team dual by the host Wildcats. Whitworth's Kristi Dickey was leading the women's race with a half mile to go before a wrong turn cost her the lead and the victory. She took second in 19:18 on the five kilometer course, six seconds behind Brandy Anderson of CWU. Julie Lauterbach made the same wrong turn, which dropped her from third to fifth in the final standings. Her time was 20:12. Jenna Ann Cunningham had her best finish as a Pirate, taking 8th place in 21:01. Stephanie Thurston (21:02) and Elaine Heinemann (21:03) followed in ninth and tenth place, respectively. Central won the women's meet 21-34 over the Pirates. Whitworth's top 12 men did not compete in the competition as they rested to compete in next weekend's Willamette Invitational. As a result, CWU defeated Whitworth 17-42. Jamie Duroff was the Pirates' top runner, taking 10th in 29:59 on the eight kilometer course. Chris Lozier followed in 11th place (30:11). Stefan Robinson finished 13th (30:16), while Jeff Forsyth was 17th (31:02). Thomas Robinson rounded out Whitworth's top five in 20th place (31:44). Next week only Whitworth's men will compete as they travel to Salem, Oregon for the Willamette Invitational, one of the largest collegiate cross country races in the United States.
