SPOKANE, Wash. -- Whitworth's cross country women raced to a second place showing at the Runners Soul Big Foot Open on Saturday morning at Spokane Falls Community College, falling only to NAIA 13th-ranked Lewis-Clark State. The Pirate men finished a somewhat disappointing fourth place.
Julie Lauterbach finished second overall and first among collegiate runners, covering the five kilometer course in 18:34. Former Whitworth All-American Kristi Dickey won the race in 18:17, competing for the Houk Chiropractic team. Freshman Jo E Mayer was right behind Lauterbach in third place, finishing in 18:43. Andrea Carnahan came across the line in 19:34 (21st place), while Emily Hurd finished 23rd (19:35). Kaitlin Hildebrand was Whitworth's final scoring runner, taking 26th place in 19:38. LCSC scored 39 points, followed by Whitworth (63), Whitman (65), CC of Spokane (72), Clark CC (116) and Skagit Valley CC (190). Click here for complete women's race results. The Whitworth men, who won the PLU Invitational last Saturday, did not perform to the same capability this week. Host CC of Spokane won the meet with a score of 25, followed by Lewis-Clark State (ranked 8th in NAIA - 61 points), Whitman (98), Whitworth (99), Houk Chiropractic (106), Clark CC (125), Everett CC (197), NW Indian College (233), and Skagit Valley CC (246). Senior Jeff Grassley led Whitworth runners across the line, finishing 15th in 27:18 on the 8 kilometer course. Calin Hantau of LCSC won the race in 26:02. Dusty Caseria and Travis Huskisson finished in 19th (27:34) and 20th (27:36) places, respectively. Jacob Deitz followed in 24th place (27:46), and Collin Stewart finished 28th in 28:01. Click here for complete men's race results. Whitworth is scheduled to compete next week at the Lewis-Clark State Open. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:30 am at Hells Gate State Park, just outside of Lewiston, Idaho. Only those Pirates not finishing the season at the Northwest Conference championships the following week will run at the LCSC Open, and it will be the final race of the season for those student-athletes.
