Whitworth Runs Well at Sundodger Invite

WEST SEATTLE, Wash. -- Whitworth College ran with the best of small college teams during the Sundodger Invitational Open Division on Saturday. The women finished 8th of 23 teams, while the Pirate men were 9th of 28 in the meet, which was hosted by the University of Washington at Lincoln Park.

Julie Lauterbach led the women by finishing 22nd overall on the 6 kilometer course in 22:44. There were 265 women's finishers. Jo E Meyer was 56th in 23:31, followed by Andrea Carnahan in 76th (23:55) and Kaitlin Hildebrand (23:56) in 77th, respectively. Shannon Newth rounded out Whitworth's scoring by finishing in 90th place (24:09).

Only one other NCAA Division III team (UPS) finished ahead of the Pirate women in the team standings. Canadian power Simon Fraser won with 59 points, followed by NCAA Division II Seattle Pacific (71). UPS was 4th with 181 points. Whitworth had 270.

Freshman Dusty Caseria led the Whitworth men by finishing 46th of 281 runners in the men's 8 kilometer race. His time was 26:10. Jeff Grassley was 57th in 26:10, while Jacob Deitz was 77th in 26:30. Travis Huskisson (26:51) finished just ahead of Jeff Forsyth (26:51) in 100th and 101st, respectively.

Just like the women, Whitworth's men finished behind only one NCAA Division III team. The Pirates scored 280 points. NCAA Division II Chico State won the meet with 80 points, followed by NCAA Division II Western Washington (98). UPS was 7th with 194.

Next Saturday Whitworth will host the Whitworth Short Course Invitational. Both the men and women will run two mile races on the Whitworth Back 40 course. The first race begin at 10:00 am. Gonzaga University and the Community Colleges of Spokane will participate in the race.
