Lauterbach Leads Pirate Women to Win

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Julie Lauterbach won the Whitworth Short Course Meet women's competition by more than 20 seconds, leading the Pirate women to a team victory over Community Colleges of Spokane and Gonzaga University on Saturday morning.

Gonzaga's Joe Miller won the men's race, edging teammate Colby Litzenberger, but the Community Colleges of Spokane men won the team competition.

Both races were two mile competitions.

Lauterbach finished in 11:48.3, defeating Gonzaga's Emmy Bentley, who finished in 12:09.9. Pirate freshman Jo E Meyer was third in 12:13.0. Larson Agee was the top finisher for CCS, taking fifth in 12:24.7.

The Pirates placed six runners among the top 10 to finish with 25 points. Community Colleges of Spokane (52 points) edged Gonzaga (57 points) for second place.

Miller finished the men's race in 9:45.5, while Litzenberger ran the course in 9:49.2. But CCS had the next three runners, and four of the top eight, to win the meet with 34 points. The Bulldogs were second with 42, and the Pirates were third (58).

Charles Cummings (9:49.8), Rick Bogatay (9:55.7), and Jake Sanders (10:03.0) were the runners who finished 3-5 for the Sasquatch. Whitworth freshman Dusty Casseria was 7th (10:05.8).

Whitworth will take a week off before returning to competition on October 7th at the PLU Invitational. The meet will take place at the Lutes' on-campus golf course, and will be a preview of the Northwest Conference championship course at the end of the season.
