WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Whitworth University ran away with both of the team titles during Saturday's season-opening Whitman Invitational cross country meet at Ft. Walla Walla Park.

The Pirate women and men each finished first through fourth individually to easily claim the team victories.

Tonya Turner won the race for the second consecutive year, running the four kilometer course in 14:30.28. Joy Shufeldt was second in 14:54.22, while Dana Misterek and Katie Williams were third (15:09.42) and fourth (15:18.62), respectively. Adrienne Ritchie was the final Pirate scorer, taking 11th place in 16:08.51.

The women's team scores were: Whitworth 21, Whitman 47, Puget Sound 81, Pacific Lutheran 84.

Trevor Berrian won the men's race as he overtook teammate Kalen Darling over the final kilometer of the six kilometer race. Berrian won in 20:03.31, while Darling ran 20:09.56. Aaron Jenkins was third in 20:29.03 and Mark Davis was fourth in 20:30.96. Tyler Dudley was the fifth Whitworth runner, taking ninth place in 20:44.94.

The final men's team scores were: Whitworth 19, Whitman 53, Pacific Lutheran 66, Puget Sound 100.

The Pirates will not compete again until September 18th at the Sundodger Invitational hosted by the University of Washington at Lincoln Park in Seattle.
