Four Pirates Named Academic All-District

Spokane, Wash. -- Four Whitworth College football players have been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII College Division football team, according to district coordinator Chris Zills of Marion College, who released the team today.

Cameron Collings, Kyle Havercroft, Nick Kuntz and Austin Richard were selected from a list of players nominated by sports information directors from NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA schools west of the Rocky Mountains.

Collings (Spokane, Wash. - Mead HS) is a junior kicker and punter with a 3.92 grade point average (GPA) in the field of athletic training. He has made six of eight field goals (with a long of 53 yards) and 40 of 43 PATs to lead the Northwest Conference in both categories. He has also averaged 34 yards per punt.

Havercroft (Rathdrum, Idaho - Lakeland HS), a redshirt freshman running back, is an athletic training major with a 3.61 GPA. He leads the Pirates in 2004 with 10 touchdowns scored in only six games played. He has run for 442 yards and averaged 74 yards per game.

Nick Kuntz (Boise, Idaho - Eagle HS), a redshirt sophomore defensive back, is a biology major with a 3.83 GPA. He has started all eight games this season and recorded 34 total tackles. He has also forced a pair of fumbles and intercepted one pass.

Austin Richard (Seattle, Wash. - Blanchet HS), a redshirt junior defensive lineman, is a kinesiology and education major with a 3.38 GPA. A 2003 honorable mention All-NWC selection, Richard has started all eight games this year and is fifth on the team with 42 total tackles.

Founded by CoSIDA in 1952, the Academic All-America Teams program recognizes collegiate student-athletes for their outstanding achievements in the classroom and on the playing field. Over the past 50 years, the Academic All-America program has grown into one of the most recognized and prestigious collegiate scholar-athlete awards nationwide, honoring student-athletes from all NCAA championship sports. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00 and be nominated for the team by his school's sports information director.
