Several Pirates Earn All-Northwest Conference Honors

Spokane, Wash. -- Five Whitworth College football players have been named First Team All-Northwest Conference and seven others were either second team or honorable mention selections after Whitworth's successful 7-2 season in 2004.

Senior offensive lineman Tyler Neely (Okanagan, Wash. - Okanagan HS) and senior linebacker Jeremy Scroggins (Royal City, Wash. - Royal City HS) were joined on the first team by junior place kicker Cameron Collings (Spokane, Wash. - Mead HS), sophomore wide receiver Jared Thomas (Newberg, Ore. - Newberg HS) and sophomore tight end Michael Allan (Bellevue, Wash. - Interlake HS).

Neely led an offensive line that allowed the Pirates to rush for 193 yards per game and set school records for total offense (4,185 yards) and total offense per game (465.0). Neely also was Whitworth's long snapper this season on punts and field goals.

Scroggins led Whitworth with 77 total tackles in 2004. He was the NWC Defensive Player of the Week after the game at La Verne on September 18 when he recorded nine tackles, including three for loss, and recovered a fumble in the Pirates' 43-23 win.

Collings led all Northwest Conference kickers in points scored (66, 7.3 per game). He had the best numbers for field goals in terms of total made (7) and percentage (7/9 for 78%). He also had the best PAT percentage (45/48 for 94%). His field goals of 53 yards against Eastern Oregon and 48 yards against PLU are the longest of the season in the NWC.

Thomas led the NWC in receiving yards (977) and receiving yards per game (108.6). He was second in the league in receptions (50) and receptions per game. Thomas averaged 19.5 yards per catch and scored six touchdowns.

Allan led all NWC tight ends in receptions (29) and receiving yards (409). He caught five touchdown passes and averaged 14.1 yards per catch.

Joel Clark (So., QB, Spokane, Wash. - Mt. Spokane HS), Kyle Snell (RS Jr., WR, Issaquah, Wash. - Univ. of Arizona), Chris Gilliam (Sr., OG, Bend, Ore. - Bend HS) and Kevin Reese (Jr., OT, Hayden Lake, Idaho - Lakeland HS) were named to the second team offense. Greg Entel (Sr., De, Clarkston, Wash. - Clarkston HS) and Daniel Jones (Jr., LB, Coos Bay, Ore. - Marshfield HS) were named to the second team defense. Austin Richard (Jr., DT, Seattle, Wash. - Blanchet HS) was an honorable mention selection on defense as well.

Clark completed 60.3% of his passes for 2,289 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2004. He was 149 of 247 with only five interceptions. He also ran for 347 yards and five more touchdowns. He averaged 292.6 yards per game of total offense and posted the second highest single game total offense output in school history when he had 502 yards at Linfield.

Kyle Snell caught 41 passes for 590 yards, to rank among the conference leaders in receptions per game (4.56) and receiving yards per game (65.6). He averaged 14.4 yards per catch and caught six touchdown passes. He also averaged 22.7 yards per kick off return, including a 91 yard touchdown in the final game against PLU.

Gilliam is a two year starter and Reese is a three year starter for the Pirates on the offensive line.

Greg Entel finished with 42 total tackles, including 20 solo, in 2004. He had four tackles for losses totaling 11 yards and also recovered two fumbles.

Daniel Jones finished with 69 stops (33 solo). He had seven tackles for losses of 18 yards, recovered two fumbles, intercepted one pass while breaking up four others, and blocked a kick.

Austin Richard totaled 51 tackles (18 solo), including seven for losses of 18 yards. He forced a fumble and intercepted a pass.

Whitworth finished 7-2 overall in 2004 and 3-2 in the NWC to take third place in the final standings.
