Complete stats and play by play Spokane, Wash. - Scoring more points in a single game than any Pirate team since 1976, Whitworth College ran away early from Lewis & Clark College in a 69-12 Northwest Conference football game Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Pine Bowl. The Pirates led 55-6 at halftime while improving to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the NWC. The last time Whitworth scored as many points in a single game was a 70-30 win over Whitman in 1976. Wide receiver Jared Thomas caught six passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns and ran three times for 12 yards and another score to lead the Pirate offense. His three touchdowns came only five minutes apart in the second quarter, turning the game from a 28-6 lead into a 48-6 lead. He scored on a six yard run with 11:15 to play, followed by a 74-yard reception from reserve quarterback Zach Henningsen with 7:03 to play, finishing with a 57-yard reception on an inside screen with 5:52 to play. Whitworth quarterbacks were 11 for 11 for 264 yards and five touchdowns. Starter Joel Clark was 8 for 8 for 115 yards and two scores. Henningsen completed all three of his passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns. Henningsen's first two touchdowns went to Thomas, and his third touchdown went to tight end Michael Allan from 18 yards away with 1:28 to play in the half. Clark passed 12 yards to David Woods and 30 yards to Kyle Snell for his two TD passes. Whitworth led 14-0 on a pair of one-yard runs by Chris Ahsing, who finished with 103 yards on 19 carries. Jay Tully set up the first score with a 73-yard kick off return on the opening play to the L&C 13 yard line. The Pioneers answered with an 86-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by freshman Mike Wennerlind, pulling L&C to within 14-6 after the extra point was wide right. The Pirates scored the next 55 points to take a 69-6 lead in the third quarter. Whitworth did not attempt a pass after halftime. The Pirates scored on a 10-yard run by Nick Koller and a one-yard run by Drew Griggs in the third quarter. It was the first career touchdown for both. L&C's final score also came in the third quarter when Robert Pugmire passed 18 yards to Reuben Miller with 59 seconds to play in the period. Whitworth outgained the Pioneers 497-260, but 412 of those yards came in the first half. L&C gained 181 yards after halftime. Pugmire was 9/21 for 137 yards with one touchdown and one interception for the Pioneers. Miller caught six passes for 61 yards, including his score. Brandon Zerr-Smith ran for 39 yards on 16 carries to lead the L&C ground attack. Defensive linemen Justin Rundle and Austin Richard led the Pirate defense with a pair of tackles for losses each. Reserve safety Shawn Agustin intercepted two passes in the second half, while linebacker Dan Jones set up a first half touchdown by forcing and recovering a Pioneer fumble. Linebacker Josh Houk led the L&C defense with 11 tackles, including two for loss. He also forced and recovered a fumble in the second half. Whitworth will return to action next Saturday when the Pirates play a key Northwest Conference game at Willamette University. Lewis & Clark returns to Portland to play its final home contest of the year when the Pioneers host second-ranked Linfield College. |
