Spokane, Wash. - Whitworth College checked in at #17 today in the American Football Coaches Association Division III football poll, the highest Division III ranking in school history.

Whitworth (6-1 overall, 2-1 NWC) had been listed with "others receiving votes" since a season-opening win at University of Redlands, but made the top 25 for the first time this week. Losses by ten teams ranked in last week's poll reshuffled this week's rankings.

The Pirates, whose only loss this season was a 48-37 setback at 2nd-ranked Linfield, are the highest ranked newcomer in the poll this week.

Whitworth was last ranked in September of 2002. After starting the season 3-0 the Pirates were ranked 22nd in the AFCA Division III poll. That was also the previous high ranking for the Bucs.

Whitworth faces a crucial test this week at Willamette (6-2, 3-0). The Pirates and Bearcats are battling for one of the few available at-large berths in the NCAA Division III playoffs. The game kicks off at 1:00 p.m.
