Five Pirates Named Academic All-District
November 11, 2005

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Five Whitworth College football players have been recognized for their success in the classroom as well as their accomplishments on the football field by being selected to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII Football College Division Team.

Jon Erlenmeyer (Jr., C, Moses Lake, Wash. - Moses Lake) and Steve Honeyman (Jr., OL, Kennewick, Wash. - Kamiakin) were selected to two of the five offensive line positions. Erlenmeyer has a 3.47 grade point average in applied physics. Honeyman has a 3.96 GPA, tied for the highest on the entire All-District team, in economics and international business.

Nick Kuntz (Jr., WR, Boise, Idaho-Eagle) is a biology major with a 3.86 GPA. Kuntz has caught 29 passes for 384 yards with three touchdowns and is on the Academic All-District team for the second year in a row.

On the defensive side of the ball, Austin Richard (Sr., NT, Seattle, Wash. - Blanchet) is also on the All-Academic team for the second year in a row. Richard has made 36 tackles this season, including six totaling 22 yards in losses. He is a secondary education major with a 3.35 GPA.

Nick Portrey (Jr., LB, Ritzville, Wash. - Ritzville) has a 3.53 GPA in international business. Portrey is second on the team with 44 tackles, including five for losses of 27 yards.

Whitworth tied with Central Washington University for the most student athletes to make the 24 player team.

All five students will now be submitted as candidates for CoSIDA's Academic All-American College Division team.

The Academic All-District teams are selected from NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA players throughout the western United States. The players are nominated and selected by members of CoSIDA. To be eligible for nomination, a player must be a starter or important reserve with a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and of sophomore standing.
