SPOKANE, Wash. -- Whitworth College offensive lineman Steve Honeyman has been named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-America college division football team. A Second Team selection, Honeyman had previously been a First Team Academic All-District VIII selection, based on nominations and voting by regional college Sports Information Directors.
The Academic All-America teams are selected from the eight all-district teams throughout United States. The all-district winners are nominated and selected by members of CoSIDA. To be eligible for nomination, a player must be a starter or important reserve with a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and of sophomore standing. Only two players from the District VIII team made the All-America list. Honeyman, one of the 2006 team captains, is an international business and economics major with a GPA of 3.95. He played both tackle and center for the Pirates this year, leading an offensive line that has helped the Pirates average 140 yards per game on the ground and 358 yards per game overall. Honeyman helped lead the Pirates to an 11-1 record, an outright Northwest Conference title, a top ten ranking, and the first post season victory in school history. Honeyman was featured in local media this season for his excellence on the field and in the classroom, as well as his ability to play the aboriginal didgeridoo. |
