Five Pirates Earn All-Region Honors

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Led by Northwest Conference Players of the Year Joel Clark and Casey Clifton, Whitworth had five student-athletes named to the D3football.com 2006 All-West Region team today.

Clark and Clifton, along with Michael Allan and Jay Tully, were named to the First Team. Ryan Marshall was selected to the Second Team. Only regional champion Wisconsin-Whitewater had more players (five) selected to the first team. St. John's (Minn.) joined Whitworth with four players on the first team.

Clark (Sr., QB, Spokane, Wash. - Mt. Spokane) completed 61.4% of his passes (167-272) for 2,576 yards with 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions this fall. In addition, he ran for 339 yards and six more touchdowns. He concludes his career as Whitworth's all-time record holder in total offense (9,656 yards), passing yards (8,513), touchdown passes (71) and touchdown's responsible for - rushing and passing (86).

Michael Allan (Sr., TE, Bellevue, Wash. - Interlake) caught 53 passes for 1,100 yards and nine touchdowns. He led the Northwest Conference in touchdown receptions and yards per catch (20.8), earning First Team All-NWC honors for the third straight year. He closes his career with school records for touchdown receptions (29) and yards per catch (18.7). Allan is a repeat selection to the D3football.com All-Region team.

Clifton (Jr., LB, Spokane, Wash. - University) led Whitworth in solo tackles (49), total tackles (102), tackles for loss (10.5 - 65 yards), and sacks (5.0 - 56 yards). He was Whitworth's leading tackler in eight of 12 games this fall. He had 17 tackles in Whitworth's first ever win at Linfield, and also forced a fumble that he returned for a touchdown in the game.

Tully (Jr., SS, Spokane, Wash. - Mead) tied for the Northwest Conference lead in interceptions (7) and total passes defended (14). He was second on the Pirate team with 43 solo tackles. In the final regular season game of the year he blocked a punt against UPS that he recovered for the go-ahead touchdown. He was a First Team All-NWC selection this fall.

Marshall (Jr., CB, Salem, Ore. - Sprague) tied with Tully for the NWC lead in interceptions and passes defended. He finished with 35 solo tackles. He returned a blocked PAT vs. La Verne for a defensive two point conversion. He is a repeat All-Region selection and is was a First Team All-NWC choice for the second straight year.

This group led Whitworth to its first-ever 10+ win season (11-1), first outright Northwest Conference title and first post season victory in school history.
