Oct. 14, 2006

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Playing in front of legends and ghosts, as well as the largest recorded crowd in Whitworth Pine Bowl history, Whitworth College rode the emotions and energy of the afternoon to a 70-3 win over visiting Lewis & Clark on Homecoming and Hall of Fame day.

Clark broke the career
TD pass record

The 12th-ranked Pirates improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the NWC in front of 3,650 spectators, including the 1960 Whitworth football team - inducted today into the Heritage Gallery Hall of Fame - and other football alumni back for the 100th year of football celebration on campus.

Quarterback Joel Clark completed 11 of 15 passes for 186 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions, and also ran 20 yards for a TD on his only carry, while only playing two quarters. He broke the record for career touchdown passes of 57, originally set by Denny Spurlock, a member of the 1960 team.

Steve Silva caught six of the passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns, from 45 and 25 yards. Tight end Michael Allan caught three passes for 53 yards and one touchdown, tying Sam Adams for career touchdown receptions with 24. Adams was head coach of the 1960 squad.

Running backs Milton Nelson and Shane Stonemetz led ten different Pirate ball carriers. Each carried nine times - Nelson for 84 yards and Stonemetz for 79 yards and a score. Whitworth ran for 276 yards as a team. Kyle Havercroft and Obe Quarless also ran for touchdowns.

Whitworth opened the game with a 61 yard drive, culminated by Clark's 20 yard run for a touchdown. Lewis & Clark followed with a 59 yard drive, more than one third of its total yards in the entire game (176). Andrew Foote kicked a 33 yard field goal to pull the Pioneers to within 7-3.

But that was as close as L&C would get. The Pirates led 21-3 after the first quarter, including Clark's 45 yard touchdown pass to Silva and Tully's interception return. Whitworth scored four more times in the second quarter. After Marshall's interception return, Silva caught a 25 yard touchdown, Allen scored from 34 yards and Havercroft ran in from two yards.
