Whitworth Shocks Stout 14-13 in Double Overtime

MENOMONIE, Wis. -- Quarterback Joel Clark drove visiting Whitworth 76 yards in the final 1:06 of regulation to a game-tying touchdown, and Shane Stonemetz scored on third and one on the Pirates' second possession of overtime to give host Wisconsin-Stout their first non-conference loss since 2003.

The Blue Devils kept the Pirates out of the endzone until three seconds remained in regulation, when Clark hit Jay Tully with a touchdown from four yards out. Stout had a chance to clinch the win, but missed a field goal from 41 yards with 1:06 to play in the game.

Both teams missed field goals on the first possession of overtime, Whitworth's Cam Collings from 40 yards and Stout's Brandon Raciborski from 37 yards.

The Blue Devils scored on quarterback Tanner Kattre's one-yard plunge on the second possession, but Raciborski's extra point was wide right. Whitworth won the game after Stonemetz scored and Collings hit the PAT. The winning touchdown was set up by a 20-yard completion from Clark to Michael Allan at the five yard line.

Ryan Englebert's 71 yard touchdown run on Stout's first possession of the game looked like it might be all the scoring the Blue Devils would need. Englebert finished with 129 yards on 15 carries. Especially after Stout intercepted Clark three times deep in its own territory to end Pirate scoring threats.

Stonemetz scored the overtime TD

The Pirates drove the length of the field on their first possession, but Clark was intercepted in the endzone by defensive back Tony Fitts, who returned the ball out to the 37 yard line. Englebert scored on the next drive. Whitworth then drove into Stout territory on the next possession, but on 3rd and 13 at the Blue Devils' 34 yard line, Clark was intercepted by Rob Weinstein at the 16 yard line, and Weinstein returned the ball to Stout's 43 yard line.

Cam Collings had a chance to get the Pirates on the board at the end of the second quarter, but his 47 yard attempt was short.

At the end of the third quarter, Clark was intercepted on the Stout three yard line by Luke Steffen, who returned the ball to out to the 34.

The Blue Devils had a chance to ice the game when they sacked Clark on fourth and eight at the Whitworth 36 with 3:47 to play in the game. After gaining one first down, Whitworth held and forced Raciborski's field goal attempt, which missed. Raciborski was 0-3 for the game on field goals.

Taking over on the 24 yard line with 1:06 to play, Clark completed passes of 12 yards to Allan, 17 to Drew Griggs and 36 yards to Allan in a heavy rain, moving the ball to the Stout 11 yard line. After two Clark runs moved the ball to the four, Clark found Tully for the potential game tying score with three seconds left in regulation. Collings made the extra point to force the overtime.

Portrey had ten tackles

Clark was 18 of 31 for 216 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. Those are his first interceptions of the season. He also ran for 47 yards on 18 attempts. Allan finished with six catches for 108 yards, while Steve Silva had four grabs for 59 yards. Milton Nelson was Whitworth's leading rusher with 59 yards on 15 attempts. Starter Chris Ahsing missed the game because of a broken ankle.

Other than Englebert's big game, Whitworth's defense held Stout's strong ground game to 72 yards on 22 attempts. Overall, the Blue Devils ran for 201 yards on 37 carries. Kattre finished 12 of 22 for 77 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. He ran for 35 yards and a score. Jesse Wendt caught six passes, but for only 20 yards.

Whitworth's Nick Portrey had 10 tackles, and Tyler Hall added nine stops. Casey Clifton had seven tackles, including a ten yard sack. Ryan Marshall had six tackles, including one for loss of eight yards, and a pass break up. Tully and Peter Ghilardi each broke up a pair of passes.

Whitworth outgained the Blue Devils 387-278 and the Pirates had a a 22-14 edge in first downs and a 34:32-25:28 advantage in time of possession. Stout made only four of 14 third down attempts and was 0 for 3 on fourth downs.

Whitworth, 3-0 and ranked 17th in the latest D3football.com poll, will return to the Pine Bowl next Saturday to take on NAIA power Azusa Pacific at 1:00 pm. Stout (2-1) opens conference play with a game at UW-Platteville.
