December 17, 2007

SALEM, Va. -- Jay Tully, the 2007 Northwest Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year from Whitworth University, has been named a Second Team All-American by D3football.com. The D3football.com All-America team was announced at Saturday's Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, the NCAA Division III football championship game.

Tully (Sr., SS, Spokane, Wash. - Mead) led the Pirates in tackles this season with 71 and had four interceptions, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble. He was a significant part of a Whitworth defense that led NCAA Division III in turnover ratio (+26) and led the conference in points allowed (14.7 per game) this season.

He had previously been named First Team All-Region by D3football.com and First Team All-Northwest Conference, sharing the NWC Defensive Player of the Year honor with Andrew Eisentrout of PLU. Tully is also an ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII selection in 2007.

On December 8th Tully participated in the 2007 Aztec Bowl, which pits an NCAA Division III all-star team against a squad of college all-stars from Mexico. He had three tackles, including one for loss of three yards, for Team USA in a 37-19 win over Mexico. Tully became the fourth Pirate player to participate in the game since it became a showcase for NCAA Division III all-stars 11 seasons ago.

Tully helped lead Whitworth to an 8-2 final record and a 6-0 mark in the Northwest Conference, earning a second consecutive NWC title. The Pirates broke a school record for combined victories in back to back seasons with 19 - 11 in 2006 and 8 in 2007 (surpassing the consecutive 9-win seasons in 1960 and 1961).
