Whitworth Runs over Lewis & Clark

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Whitworth University ran for 395 yards beat Lewis & Clark College 48-7 in a Northwest Conference football game on Saturday afternoon at Griswold Stadium.

The 25th-ranked Pirates (5-1 overall, 3-0 NWC) won their fifth straight contest and are now the only unbeaten team in the NWC after Puget Sound's win over Willamette today. The Pioneers fell to 0-5, 0-2).

Milton Nelson (So., RB, Spokane, Wash. - EWU) and Tyler Mattair (So., RB, Kennewick, Wash. - WWU) each ran for more than 100 yards to lead the Whitworth rushing game. Nelson picked up 128 yards on 19 carries with one touchdown, while Mattair totaled 112 yards on 24 carries with a score. Chris Ahsing (Sr., RB, Ewa Beach, Hawaii - Campbell) started the game and picked up 61 yards on eight carries and scored two times. Adam Anderson (So., RB, Elk, Wash. - Univ. of Idaho) ran for 69 yards on seven carries and scored a touchdown.

Starting quarterback Kory Kemp (Jr., QB, Redmond, Wash. - Eastlake) ran for a touchdown to give Whitworth six rushing scores in the game. He also completed 6 of 7 passes for 64 yards in his one quarter of play. Jon Luke (Jr., QB, Enumclaw, Wash. - Enumclaw) played the second quarter and completed 5 of 7 passes for 82 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown pass to Joey VanHoomissen (Jr., TE, Renton, Wash. - Kentridge), who made his first career touchdown reception.

Ray Valle (So., QB, Royal City, Wash. - Royal) played the final two quarters and was 3 of 7 for 31 yards.

Whitworth took a 20-0 lead after the first quarter and led 41-7 at halftime after scoring on its first four possession and six of the seven in the first half. Anderson completed Whitworth's first drive with a 22-yard touchdown run, and Ahsing made it 13-0 with a six yard score on the Bucs' second possession. Kemp scrambled for 23 yards and a score on the Pirates third possession of the game.

In the second quarter Ahsing carried in from 10 yards to make it 27-0. Lewis & Clark scored its only touchdown of the game when AJ Brown passed to Mike Wennerlind from 31 yards out. Whitworth then completed its longest drive of the game, going 98 yards in five plays, scoring on Mattair's four yard run. Nelson set up the touchdown with a 46 yard carry. The Pirates completed the first half scoring with Luke's touchdown pass to VanHoomissen.

The final touchdown of the game came in the third quarter when Nelson ran in from 14 yards.

Whitworth ran for 395 yards and finished with 572 total yards, both season highs. Lewis & Clark finished with 149 total yards as the Pirates held the Pioneers to 53 yards on the ground and 96 in the air.

Layton Brown (Fr., LB, Kennewick, Wash. - Kennewick) led the Whitworth defense with five tackles. Greg Caster (Sr., LB, Sherwood, Ore. - Sherwood) had three tackles, including a six yard sack and another tackle for loss of three yards, and recovered a fumble. Marc Grow (Sr., LB, Warden, Wash. - Warden) had four tackles, including a nine-yard sack, and broke up a pass.

Whitworth will put its five game winning streak on the line next weekend at Azusa Pacific.
