Whitworth Rolls Past UPS 34-13

TACOMA, Wash. -- Whitworth University completed a second straight Northwest Conference football season unbeaten and made a final case to the NCAA Division III football selection committee with a 34-13 win at University of Puget Sound on Saturday afternoon.

Anderson scored three touchdowns for the Bucs

The 20th-ranked Pirates (8-2 overall, 6-0 NWC) now wait for tomorrow morning's announcement of the NCAA Division III playoff field, which will be broadcast on ESPNU at 8:30 a.m. The Loggers finish the season 4-5, 2-4.

Whitworth had complete control of the football game for over three and a half quarters. The Pirates led 34-0 before UPS scored a pair of late touchdowns in the final seven minutes of the game. Whitworth outgained UPS 510 - 280, had a 20-12 advantage in first downs and controlled the ball for 35:48 of the game's 60 minutes.

Adam Anderson scored three touchdowns to lead the Pirate offense. He carried 12 times for 92 yards and two scores and caught two passes for 29 yards and another TD. Chris Ahsing ran 15 times for 92 yards and a touchdown as the Bucs gained 270 yards on the ground.

Kory Kemp had a strong outing for Whitworth, completing 16 of 23 passes for 195 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. In addition to his TD pass to Anderson, he threw seven yards to Joey Vanhoomissen to complete the Pirates' first drive with a touchdown. Back up QB Jon Luke was 5 of 8 for 45 yards. Steve Silva caught 8 passes for 77 yards, while Nick Koller made four grabs for 28 yards.

Whitworth scored on its first three drives to open up a 20-0 lead. The Bucs went 60 yards on 12 plays on the first drive, converting a fourth down near midfield before Kemp's pass to Vanhoomissen. Then Whitworth needed only four plays to go 89 yards on the next possession. Kemp completed a 39 yard pass to Vanhoomissen to move the ball into UPS territory and Anderson ran 44 yards for a score on the next play. Ahsing completed the third scoring drive with a two yard run after Whitworth recovered a UPS fumble on the Loggers' 44 yard line.

Marshall recovered a fumble and an interception

The Pirates made the score 27-0 at halftime when Kemp found Anderson over the middle for a 25 yard score with 50 seconds left in the second quarter that completed a 64 yard drive.

Whitworth put the game essentially out of reach by scoring on its first possession of the second half. Ahsing ran 59 yards to the UPS five yard line and Anderson scored on the next play to put the Pirates up 34-0.

Silas Paul and Mike Griffith ran for late touchdowns for the Loggers.

Marc Grow led Whitworth with six tackles, while Ryan Marshall picked off his fifth pass of the seaosn and recovered a fumble. Whitworth, the NCAA Division III leaders in turnover margin, took away three UPS fumbles and two interceptions. The Bucs had two fumbles of their own, but increased their 2007 turnover margin to +26.

Whitworth has now broken a school record for number of wins in back to back seasons with 19 (11 in 2006 and 8 in 2007), beating the consecutive nine-win seasons of 1960 and 1961. The Pirates have won 13 NWC games in a row and Whitworth is hoping for a second straight appearance in the NCAA Division III playoffs.
