Spokane, Wash. -- Whitworth University football officially opens the 2008 season Friday when 92 players put on a Pirate helmet for the first practice of the season. The players check in today, picking up equipment and going through physicals. The first practice will be Friday at 3:00 p.m. Whitworth returns 9 starters this season, including seven on offense, from a team that finished 8-2 overall and won a second straight Northwest Conference title in 2007. The Pirates are picked second in the 2008 NWC preseason coaches poll. Optimism is strengthened by the fact that the Pirate offense will be led by returning NWC Offensive Player of the Year Adam Anderson (Jr., RB, Elk, Wash. - Riverside/Univ. of Idaho), who rushed for 958 yards and scored 12 touchdowns last season. He will run behind a big and experienced offensive line. Kory Kemp (Sr., Redmond, Wash. - Eastlake) returns as the starting quarterback. Whitworth opens the season at home on September 13th against the University of La Verne. Kick off is scheduled for Noon. 2008 Pirate Practice Schedule: Friday (Aug. 22) - 3:00 pm |
