Anderson (Jr., RB, Elk, Wash.) scored Whitworth's first four touchdowns, but three of those did not come until after halftime when the Pirates were able to pull away from a 7-7 tie after two quarters. His rushing total is a career high, as are his four rushing touchdowns in a single game. Despite a 228-103 advantage in total offense at halftime, Whitworth (3-3 overall, 1-2 NWC) could not break ahead of the Loggers after missing out on two scoring opportunities. The Pirates took the opening possession 66 yards, including a 47 yard run by Anderson to the UPS 10 yard line. He scored from the two yard line three plays later and the extra point gave Whitworth a 7-0 lead. But the Loggers answered impressively, driving 71 yards on 13 plays. On third and 11 at the Whitworth 14 yard line, Kavin Williams passed to a wide open Richard Bigelow for a UPS touchdown, which tied the game. Then on consecutive drives the Pirates got into the Logger red zone, but could not score. First Andy Largent (Jr., WR/PK, Spokane, Wash.) had a 37 yard field goal blocked by Dan Mensonides. Then the Pirates used a 13 play drive to get to the UPS 10 yard line before the Loggers forced a 26 yard field goal attempt that missed wide left. The Pirates had a potential touchdown run by Andrew Durant (Fr., QB, Spokane, Wash.) called back after an illegal block penalty away from the play. Finally the Pirates drove again deep into UPS territory, only to have James Sobotka intercept a Durant pass at the Logger 17 yard line. But Whitworth took control in the third quarter. After the Pirate defense forced a three and out by the Loggers, Whitworth went 83 yards in only three plays, culminated in a 48 yard touchdown run by Anderson. UPS then fumbled the kick off, giving the Pirates first down on the Logger 36 yard line. Nine plays later Anderson ran three yards for his third TD of the game. Trailing 21-7, the Loggers looked like they might get back into the game. Williams completed a 20 yard pass to Brian Eggers, then connected for 44 yards to Darrell Stewart to the Whitworth 10 yard line. On fourth and goal at the Pirate one, Silas Paul was stopped for no gain by Cameron Stroyan (Jr., LB, Chewelah, Wash.) and Alex Couette (So., LB, Yakima, Wash.), ending a 73 yard drive one play short of pulling within a single score. Cub Jansen (Fr., QB, Mukilteo, Wash.) then led the Pirates on a 99-yard drive, that spanned the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth. On third and eight at the Whitworth three, Jansen scrambled nine yards for a first down. He later completed a 34 yard pass to Dale Entel (Fr., WR, Clarkston, Wash.) to the Logger 20. Three plays later Anderson scored from 17 yards away to give the Pirates a 28-7 lead. A 37 yard run by Milton Nelson (Jr., RB, Spokane, Wash.) set up the final score of the game, a three yard carry by Shenon Moore (Fr., RB, Honolulu, Hawaii) with 1:17 to play. The Pirates used three different quarterbacks on Saturday. Mike Peck (Jr., QB, Longview, Wash.) started the game and went 4-4 for 27 yards. Durant completed 9 of 15 throws for 91 yards while throwing the Bucs' only interception. Jansen finished 4 of 5 for 53 yards. In total the three Whitworth QBs completed 17 of 24 passes for 171 yards. Eric Entel was the leading receiver with eight catches for 39 yards, while Dale Entel finished with four catches for 46 yards and Chad Flett (Sr., WR, Spokane, Wash.) caught two balls for 44 yards. Anderson's four touchdowns tie Charlie Reed (1962 vs. Eastern Washington) and Kyle Havercroft (2004 at Redlands) for most rushing touchdowns in a game. Nelson finished with 84 yards on 13 carries as the Pirates ran for 360 yards as a team. Williams finished 5 of 20 for 106 yards with one touchdown for the Loggers. The NWC's total offense leader also had 59 yards rushing. Paul led UPS with 108 yards rushing on 23 carries. Stewart was the Loggers' leading receiver with two for 58 yards. Nate Hadley (Jr., LB, Mukilteo, Wash.) led the Pirates with 11 tackles, including one for loss. Jesse Clark (Sr., SS, Spokane, Wash.) had eight stops and two pass break ups. Brandon Martin (Jr., DT, Sweet Home, Ore.) finished with six tackles, including three for losses of eight yards. Eric Borton, the conference leader in tackles per game, came up big for UPS with 12 total stops. Philip Thomas finished with nine tackles and Mensonides had eight tackles. The Pirates outgained the Loggers 531-278 and had a time of possession advantage of 36:14 - 23:46 over the team that leads the NWC in average time of possession per game. Next Saturday Whitworth will travel to California to take on Menlo College at 11:30 am in a Northwest Conference contest. UPS returns home to host Pacific Lutheran. |
