SPOKANE, Wash. -- Adam Anderson was named Offensive Player of the Year for the second season in a row, leading nine Whitworth players on the 2008 All-Northwest Conference football team, announced today. Click here for the entire All-NWC team. Anderson (Jr., RB, Elk, Wash.) shared the NWC Offensive Player of the Year award with slotback Merben Woo of NWC champion Willamette. He is joined on the First Team by Jeff Kintner (Jr., OT, Wenatchee, Wash.) and Brandon Martin (Jr., DT, Sweet Home, Ore.). Three other Pirates were named to the Second Team offense and three were named to the Second Team defense.
Anderson led the conference in rushing yards (139.9 yards per game), touchdowns (25), total points (152) and all-purpose yards (243.8 yards per game). He was named NWC Offensive Player of the Week three times, including when he posted a school record 324 all-purpose yards in a 41-35 win at Chapman and when he scored a school-record six touchdowns and ran for 217 yards in a 40-29 win at PLU. Kintner opened many of the holes for Anderson. Whitworth ran for 223.3 yards per game this season and the Pirates averaged 30.4 points per game. Kintner was a Second Team All-NWC choice in 2007. Martin is Whitworth's only selection on the All-NWC First Team defense, and he is a repeat first team choice. He led the Pirates in tackles for loss (8.5-32) and sacks (4.0-18), despite missing the final game of the year with an injured Achilles.
Milton Nelson (Jr., RB, Spokane, Wash.) is a Second Team All-NWC selection. He ran for 571 yards, averaged a team-best 5.7 yards per carry and scored four touchdowns. Michael Cozad (Jr., OG, Bellingham, Wash.) and Michael Nahl (Jr., OG, West Seattle, Wash.) are both Second Team choices as well. Cozad is a repeat second team selection.
Layton Brown (So., LB, Kennewick, Wash.), Gabe Shoemaker (So., DT, Shelton, Wash.) and Jesse Clark (Sr., SS, Spokane, Wash.) are all Second Team All-NWC defensive honorees. Brown led the Pirates with 51 total tackles this season. Shoemaker finished with 21 tackles, including 5.5 for losses of 18 yards. Clark was second on the team with 50 tackles and led the Pirates with eight passes defended. The Pirates finished 6-3 overall this season and third in the NWC with a 4-2 record.
