Now in his fifth season as the head golf coach at Whitworth, Warren Friedrichs has taken the experience of more than 20 years coaching college basketball and applied it to his lifelong avocation on the greens. One of the most successful basketball coaches in Whitworth history, Friedrichs has now made the Pirate men's golf program a regional power and is working toward putting the women's team on the map. Since its resurrection in 2003-04, Whitworth has finished second in the men's conference standings once and has now won the men's NWC title the last three years. The Whitworth men are a favorite to win the title again this season and earn another automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Pirate women, with four sophomores and two freshmen, are looking to improve on the third place finish of 2007.
Friedrichs was the men's basketball coach at Whitworth for 16 seasons. During that time the Pirates won five Northwest Conference titles and made three national tournament appearances. He was Northwest Conference Coach of the Year five times and was the 1996 NAIA Division II men's Coach of the Year.
Friedrichs has played golf his entire life. He was a two-year letter winner at Concordia College in Indiana (in addition to four letters in basketball and two letters in baseball). He has been an active player locally, participating in many area amateur tournaments. He also serves as the treasurer of the Wandermere Golf Course men's club.
Assistant Coach, Beth Wrigley
Beth Wrigley is in her third year as assistant golf coach at Whitworth, taking the lead role in coaching the women's program. In 2006-07 she directed the Pirate women to their best showing ever, a third place finish in the Northwest Conference with a team made up entirely of freshmen. Beth has played golf for 15 years and is the reigning Spokane City Tournament champion. She is active in the Spokane Area Women's Golf Association, currently serving a two-year term as treasurer. She is also the current champion of both the Indian Canyon and Creek at Qualchan women's leagues. Beth played two seasons for the Community Colleges of Spokane, earning All-NWAACC honors while the team won a pair of Eastern Division titles.
Beth is also a registered nurse and works part time at Sacred Heart Medical Center. She and her husband Bob live in Nine Mile Falls.
Assistant Coach, Ryan Nelson
Ryan Nelson, a former basketball player under Warren Friedrichs and Whitworth Alumnus, will help coach the Pirates in 2007-08. He is currently teaching at North Central High School in Spokane. |
