Parrott Leads Pirates to NWC Golf Title
April 25, 2006

SISTERS, Ore. - Defending champion Whitworth held off hard charges by Linfield and Pacific Monday to win its second straight Northwest Conference Men's Golf Championship tournament at the Aspen Lakes Golf Course.

Andrew Parrott shot the tournament's only under par round (70)

The Pirates (614), led by medallist Andrew Parrott and fifth place Jordan Carter, held on for a four stroke victory over the second place Wildcats (618), seven strokes over the third place Boxers (621). Whitworth had held a five-stroke lead over Linfield entering the second day of the tournament and a six-stroke lead over Pacific.

The victory earned the Pirates the maximum 14 points in the conference's championship standings to win their second straight NWC title. By virtue of the win, Head Coach Warren Friedrichs garnered his second men's golf Coach of the Year plaque to go along with four men's basketball Coach of the Year awards he had previously won.

Parrott, who turned in the lowest score of the first round at two-under 70, struggled amidst breezy conditions on Monday, scoring a 79. The round was not enough to take medallist honors away as Parrott won with a score of 149, one stroke ahead of Willamette's Dave Eaton.

Parrott was a winner previously this spring at the UPS Invitational. Carter had won the NWC's Fall and Spring Classics this season.

Steven Johnson just missed All-NWC honors with a two day score of 77-78 - 155. Sean Thompson (80-78 - 158) and Bobby Elder (78-81 - 159) finished among the top-15 in the NWC as well. James Dykes scored a 167, but pulled off the only hole in one of the tournament on Saturday at the 161-yard fourth hole.

In the conference point standings, Whitworth finished with 27.5 points, finishing well ahead of Linfield at 22.5 points. Pacific was third at 20, while Pacific Lutheran and Willamette tied for fourth with 14 points each.
