SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth's men finished second to Linfield College over the weekend at the NWC Fall Classic, while the Pirate women led after day one, but took fourth overall. The men, playing at Aspen Lakes GC in Sisters, Oregon, fell behind Linfield by four shots after the first day, and dropped even further back after the final round. Linfield, last season's NWC runner up, took a first step toward unseating the defending conference champion Pirates by winning with a score of 596. Whitworth (607) was second, followed by Puget Sound (609), Pacific Lutheran (623), Pacific (628), Willamette (641), Whitman (653) and Lewis & Clark (676). Andrew Parrott was Whitworth's top individual finisher, taking fourth overall with a score of 149. He shot 75 on the first day and 74 on the second. Steven Johnson shot 77-74 - 151, while Jordan Carter fired 73-79 - 152. Tyler Nelson of Linfield won medallist honors with a score of 67-74 - 141. In the conference championship scoring system, Linfield gets seven points, while Whitworth gets six points. The Pirate women, composed of all freshmen, shocked the NWC by taking first place after the first day of competition at Tokatee GC in Blue River, Oregon. But the Pirates could not keep the pace and fell to fourth place in the final standings. However, there was only five points difference between first place Willamette (689) and fourth place Whitworth (694). Puget Sound (690) was second by a stroke, while Linfield (692) finished third. Whitworth was followed by Pacific and Pacific Lutheran (716 each) and George Fox (854). Alicia Bratlien shot a 79 on the first day, but fell to a 90 on the second day. She still finished tied for seventh individually (169) with teammate Krystal Pitkonen (83-86 - 169). Mariesa Stombagh added an 86-86 - 172. Whitney Ueno of Willamette was the medallist (78-74 - 152).
