Whitworth Women Finish Third in NWC

SISTERS, Ore. - The Whitworth women's golf team completed the best season in the short history of the program by finishing third today at the Northwest Conference Tournament to jump ahead of Willamette and take third in the final overall conference standings.

The previous best finish for the women's golf team was sixth place in 2004.

The Pirate team is comprised of four freshmen and all four finished among the top 17 individuals at the tournament. Alicia Bratlien earned All-Northwest Conference honors by finishing sixth with a two-round score of 90-86 - 176. Crystal Pitkonen was tenth (95-86 - 181).

Rachel Dubes saved her best performance of the spring for when it mattered most, finishing 16th with a score of 94-91 - 185. Mariesa Stombaugh was right behind in 17th (96-90 - 186).

As a team, Whitworth shot 22 strokes better on Sunday than the Pirates did on Saturday (375-353 - 728) to move up from fourth place after the first day of competition. Whitworth was the only team in which every player shot better on the second day than the first day. The final team scores at the NWC Tournament were: Puget Sound 703, Linfield 711, Whitworth 728, Willamette 741, Pacific 743, Pacific Lutheran 768, George Fox 792, Lewis & Clark incomplete, Whitman did not play.

The final NWC standings are based on three tournaments played throughout the year. The NWC Fall Classic and NWC Spring Classic each counted 25% toward the final standings, while the NWC Tournament counted toward 50% of the total.

Puget Sound won with 31 points, followed by Linfield (27), Whitworth (23), Willamette (22), Pacific (16.5), Pacific Lutheran (9.5), George Fox (8), Whitman (3) and Lewis & Clark (0).
