SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitworth University men's golf team, in only its fifth season as a rejuvenated varsity program, is aiming for its fourth straight Northwest Conference title this weekend when the Pirates tee it up at the NWC tournament at Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima, Washington.
Click here for PLU's results website. Whitworth is currently tied with Linfield and Pacific for first place in the NWC standings. Linfield won the NWC Fall Classic, with Whitworth second and Pacific third. Pacific won the NWC Spring Classic, with Whitworth second and Linfield third. Each of those tournaments count 25% toward the final standings. This weekend's NWC tournament will count 50%. So which ever of those three teams finishes ahead of the others will win the title. Even if another school like Pacific Lutheran or Puget Sound breaks through to the top, that school is too far behind in the current standings. In a recent five-way tournament at Appletree, Whitworth finished first against PLU, UPS, Pacific and Whitman led by sophomore Patrick Dorsing, who earned medalist honors with a score of 72. In the Pirates' most recent tune up this weekend, Whitworth scored 589 as an exhibition four year school at the Community Colleges of Spokane Bigfoot Invitational. CCS posted the best score among the two-year schools (593). The event was held at Esmerelda GC on Sunday at Meadowood on Monday. Senior Jordan Carter shot 68-73 for a two round total of 141. Dorsing shot 70-76 - 146, Connor McCracken (Fr.) shot 73-77 - 150 and senior Andrew Parrot posted 74-78 - 152. Senior Sean Thompson and freshman Ryan Young each shot 77-78 - 155. The Northwest Conference champion will receive the NWC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament, which will take place on May 13-16 in Braselton, Georgia.
