Whitworth Opens Spring Season Strongly

CLARKSTON, Wash. - The Whitworth University men's and women's golf teams opened the 2008 spring season on a positive note at the Lewis-Clark State College Invitational. The Pirate men finished fourth of nine teams, finishing behind three teams ranked in the NAIA. Similarly the Whitworth women took fifth of nine behind four teams ranked in the NAIA. The tournament, the Pirates' first outside competition of 2008, was held at the Clarkston (Wash.) Golf and Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.

Whitworth's men finished with a score of 311-306 -- 617. The team scores were: Victoria (B.C.) 597, Concordia (Ore.) 602, Lewis-Clark St. 607, Whitworth 617, Rocky Mountain (Mont.) 631, Calgary 637, Calgary B 646, Alberta 659, North Idaho 701. Victoria is ranked No. 7 in the latest NAIA poll, followed by Rocky Mountain, which finished behind Whitworth on Tuesday, at No. 13, Concordia at No. 20, and LCSC is the top team receiving votes not ranked in the Top 25.

Andrew Parrott had the best individual score for the Bucs, shooting 78-72 - 150 for fourth place overall. Mitchell Evanecz of Victoria earned medalist honors with a score of 69-73 - 142.

Other Whitworth individual scores were: Jordan Carter 74-81 - 155, James Dykes 78-79 - 157, Sean Thompson 76-83 - 159, Ryan Young 80-80 - 160.

The Pirate women's score was 366-373 -- 739. The final women's team scores were: Victoria 662, Rocky Mountain 678, Lewis-Clark State 682, Concordia 689, Whitworth 739, Calgary 747, Alberta 755, Carroll 786, North Idaho 1,020. The women’s tournament featured four ranked teams – No. 8 Rocky Mountain, No. 14 Concordia, No. 17 LCSC, and No. 19 Victoria.

Krystal Pitkonen

Krystal Pitkonen led Whitworth's women with a final score of 84-89 - 173, good for 14th overall. The medalist was Alison Quinlan of Victoria, who shot 80-82 - 162.

The other scores for the Pirate women were: Alicia Bratlien 90-90 - 180, Sophie Sestero 96-92 - 188, Mariesa Stombaugh 99-95 - 194, Kaylin Carlson 102-93 - 195.

Whitworth will jump right into more heavy duty play next week. The Pirate men will dual against Warner Southern College on March 26th at Oakwood Golf Club in Lake Wales, Florida. Then both teams will compete in their respective NWC Spring Classics, which count 25% toward the final Northwest Conference standings. The women's match will be March 28-29 at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Oregon. The men's tournament will be March 29-30 at the same course.
