BANKS, Ore. - Repeating its rally feat from the fall, the Whitworth University men's golf team rallied to second place during today's final round of the 2008 Northwest Conference Men's Spring Classic at Quail Valley Golf Course. The Pirates finished behind host Pacific University, but jumped past Linfield College and are now tied with both the Boxers and Wildcats at the top of the NWC standings heading into next month's NWC Tournament.
The Pirates posted a first round score of 309 on Saturday, then followed with a 305 on Sunday for the two-round total of 614. Pacific was hot all weekend, shooting 293-299 - 592, while Linfield totaled 302-316 - 618. Jordan Carter (Sr., Woodinville, Wash.) led the Pirates individually, finishing third overall with a score of 74-75 - 149. Connor McCracken (Fr., Eagle, Idaho) tied for fourth, one stroke behind Carter, with a score of 77-73 - 150. Max Bonk of Pacific was the medalist (71-70 - 140). Patrick Dorsing (So., Royal City, Wash.) followed with rounds of 82-76 - 158, and Andrew Parrott (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) struggled through consecutive rounds of 82 (164). Ryan Young (Fr., Mill Creek, Wash.) shot 78-87 - 165, and Sean Thompson (Sr., Greenacres, Wash.) shot 79-90 - 169. At the NWC Fall Classic last October, Whitworth rallied past two teams on the second day to finish second overall. Linfield won that tournament and Pacific finished third, creating the current three-way tie in the NWC men's golf standings (see below). The Northwest Conference Fall and Spring Classic tournaments count 25% each toward the final NWC standings. Whitworth gets seven more points to add to the seven points toward the final season total by finishing second in both the fall and spring tournaments. At the end of the 2007-08 season, the NWC Championship will be determined by results posted at the NWC Fall Classic (25%), the NWC Spring Classic (25%) and the NWC Tournament (50%).
