Whitworth Women Take Second Place at Fall Classic

MISSION, Ore. - Led by Mariesa Stombaugh's fifth place individual finish, the Whitworth University women's golf team took second place in the Northwest Conference Fall Classic, hosted by Whitman College at the Wildhorse Resort GC. It is the best-ever finish by the Pirate women at an NWC tournament.

The Pirates posted a first round score of 348 in heavy wind and rain on Saturday, then followed with a 328 on Sunday for the two-round total of 676. Pacific University won the tournament with a score of 343-322 - 665. George Fox was third (367-335 - 702).

Stombaugh (So., Salem, Ore.) shot 88-77 - 165 to finish fifth overall. Her second-round score tied for the best in the tournament. Kaylin Carlson (Fr., Clarkston, Wash.) was right behind with a total of 82-85 - 167. Krystal Pitkonen (So., Colbert, Wash.) and Alicia Bratlien (So., Poulsbo, Wash.) posted identical two-day scores of 89-83 - 172 for top-ten individual finishes.

Rachel Dubes (So., Quincy, Wash.) finished with a total of 95-88 - 183, while Sophie Sestero (Fr., Boise, Idaho) shot 97-87 - 184.

The Northwest Conference Fall Classic counts 25% toward the final NWC standings. Whitworth gets seven points toward the final season total by defeating seven schools in the tournament. At the end of the 2007-08 season, the NWC Championship will be determined by results posted at the NWC Fall Classic (25%), the NWC Spring Classic (25%) and the NWC Tournament (50%).
