Whitworth Men Finish Fourth at NWC Fall Classic

Kennewick, Wash. - Unable to maintain the strong play of the first day, Whitworth University slipped to fourth place in the final standings of the NWC Men's Fall Golf Classic at Canyon Lakes Golf Course on Sunday afternoon.

Whitworth shot 307 on Saturday and sat solidly in third place. But the Pirates ballooned to 324 on Sunday for a final total of 631, allowing UPS to move ahead of Whitworth into third place. The final team scores were: Linfield 596, Pacific 599, Puget Sound 618, Whitworth 631, Willamette 633, PLU 645, Whitman 646, George Fox 652.

Jeff Aly (Fr., Bellevue, Wash.) led Whitworth by finishing 8th in the individual standings with a final score of 73-78 - 151. Ryan Young (So., Mill Creek, Wash.) and Curtis Day (Fr., Citrus Heights, Calif.) each shot 160, while James Dykes (Sr., Royal City, Wash.) fired a 161. Scott Paine (Fr., Wenatchee) and Jacob McCallum (Fr., Wenatchee) rounded out the Whitworth scores with final totals of 166 and 171, respectively.

Whitman's Brian Barton was the individual medalist by nine strokes, shooting 70-72 - 142, earning All-Northwest Conference honors with his effort.

Whitworth now gains five points toward the final NWC golf standings, while defending conference champion Linfield scores eight points and Pacific has seven points. The NWC Fall Classic counts 25% toward the final conference standings. The NWC Spring Classic will count 25%, and the end-of-the-year NWC Tournament will count 50%.
