Whitworth Men and Women Finish Second at Fall Classic

Guthrie Claims Women's Medalist Honors

PORTLAND, Ore. - Both of the golf teams from Whitworth University came away from the 2009 Northwest Conference Fall Classic with second place finishes. The Pirate women rode the medalist finish of Emily Guthrie to their second place finish, while the men posted Sunday's best team score to move from third to second in the final standings.

Guthrie posted a two-day total of 80-77 = 157 to win by three strokes over Jill Westendorf of George Fox University.

But the Bruins were able to claim the team title by placing second through fifth in the final individual standings. The Bruins overcame Whitworth's eight-stroke lead after Saturday with a blistering 309 on Sunday.

The final women's team scores were: George Fox 342-309 = 651, Whitworth 334-329 = 663, Linfield 348-333 = 681, Puget Sound 355-353 = 708, Whitman 357-351 = 708, Pacific (Ore.) 381-360 = 741, Pacific Lutheran 395-377 = 772, Willamette 411-407 = 818, Lewis & Clark 425-430 = 855.

Krystal Pitkonen finished 9th individually for the Pirates with a score of 84-83 = 167. Liz Martin tied for 13th with 81-91 = 172 and Emily Travis was 17th (89-86 = 175). Rachel Dubes posted the best 18-hole score of her career on Sunday to finish with a total of 96-83 = 179 to tie for 22nd.

Christian Boudreau posted an even-par 72-72 = 144 to finish third in the individual men's standings. Tyler Nelson of Linfield won with a three-under 72-69 = 141.

Whitworth's men posted the best team-round of the tournament on Sunday with an even-par 288. But it was not enough to overcome Linfield's seven-shot advantage after Saturday as the Wildcats totaled 292 on Sunday. However, the Pirates did manage to leapfrog over Pacific to finish in second place.

The final men's team scores were: Linfield 299-292 = 591, Whitworth 306-288 = 594, Pacific (Ore.) 301-295 = 596, Puget Sound 309-298 = 607, George Fox 323-300 = 623, Pacific Lutheran 311-313 = 624, Whitman 324-305 = 629, Willamette 331-311 = 642, Lewis & Clark 332-326 = 658.

Cameron Whittle tied for fourth place individually (76-71 = 147), while Jeff Aly finished tied for seventh place (79-71 = 150). Ryan Young shot 79-74 = 153 for a tie for 13th place. Jared Descoteaux finished tied for 19th after shooting 80-75 - 155. Frank Denoewer rounded out Whitworth's tournament with an 81-80 = 161 for a tied for 32nd place.

Whitworth's teams now gain seven points each toward the final NWC golf standings with their second place finishes. The NWC Fall Classic counts 25% toward the final conference standings. The NWC Spring Classic will count 25%, and the end-of-the-year NWC Tournament will count 50%.
