Pirates Shoot Identical Team Score in 3rd/4th Rounds

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Whitworth concluded the best season in the short history of the women's golf program with a 17th place finish at the 2010 NCAA Division III Golf Tournament on Friday. The Pirates' shot a 353 (+61) in the fourth round at the Mission Inn Resort, the same score the team had posted on Thursday.

Whitworth's four day score of 366-343-353-353 -- 1415 leaves the team 17th in the final standings, 15 strokes behind St. Lawrence University and 15 strokes ahead of Franklin College.

For the second time in the tournament's four rounds, Krystal Pitkonen (Sr.) led the Pirates in scoring. She posted a round of 85 (+12) on Friday after previously leading the team with a round of 90 on Tuesday. Emily Guthrie (Fr.) shot an 88 (+15) on Friday and Mariesa Stombaugh (Sr.) added an 89 (+16). Emily Travis had a score of 91 (+18) to account for the four score total of 353. Liz Martin (So.) totaled 92 (+19).

Pitkonen and Staumbaugh, along with fellow senior Rachel Dubes, concluded their careers by leading the team to the NCAA tournament for the first time in the history of a program that has only existed since 2005. Prior to the trio's arrival at Whitworth, the Pirate women's team had never finished higher than 7th in the NWC. This group's worst finish was third in their freshman year (2007) and they earned back-to-back co-NWC titles as juniors and seniors.

Defending champion Methodist University won its 13th consecutive national title with a 21-stroke victory margin over Gustavus Adolphus. Fellow NWC member George Fox was 8th.

Jessica Urban of Wisconsin-Stevens Point rallied to finish with a final individual score of 313 (+21) to win individual medalist honors. Guthrie's final score of 347 tied for 50th place. Pitkonen's score of 352 tied for 62nd, while Stombaught's 353 tied for 64th. Travis (365) tied for 84th and Martin (375) tied for 93rd.
