Pirates Build Momentum for Fall Classic
TACOMA, Wash. - Whitworth University swept to victory on Monday in both the men's and women's tournaments in the Northwest Conference "North" Classic at Oakbrook Country Club, a competition among the four NWC schools from the state of Washington. In doing so, the Pirate teams have build momentum for next weekend's NWC Fall Classic in Portland. After leading Whitman by only four strokes on Sunday, the Whitworth women pulled away for a 19-stroke win over host Puget Sound while Whitman fell to third place. Freshman Emily Travis tied for medalist honors with a two-day total of 83-88=171. The final team scores were Whitworth 343-353=696, Puget Sound 358-357=715, Whitman 347-370=717, Pacific Lutheran 384-384=768. Travis led a Pirate contingent that placed three players among the top four individual players. Travis tied with Taylor Head of Whitman (80-91) for medalist honors. Freshman Emily Guthrie was third (90-83=173), while sophomore Liz Martin was fourth (83-92=175). Krystal Pitkonen (87-90=177) finished in a three-way tie for fifth. Rachel Dubes (98-100=198) took 16th. There were 23 individual players. The Whitworth men were tied with Puget Sound after Sunday's first day, but posted the strongest second day to win the team title by 13 strokes. The team scores were: Whitworth 305-305=610, Puget Sound 305-318=623, Pacific Lutheran 316-313=629, Whitman 307-324=631. Whitworth's Cameron Whittle was third (82-70=152), posting the best individual round on Monday. His score today was one of only two under-par rounds in the tournament. Jared Descoteaux was fourth (73-80=153) to give Whitworth to of the top four individuals. Jeff Aly (79-79=158) and Ryan Young (83-76=159) finished 10th and 11th, respectively. Christian Boudreau shot 77-83=160 (tie for 11th) and Frank Denoewer fired 76-85=161 (15th). Both the Whitworth men and women have won their last two tournaments. The Pirates will now head to the NWC Fall Classic. The tournament will count 25% toward the final 2009-10 conference golf standings.
