Whittle, Travis Post Superp First Rounds
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitworth men's and women's golf teams each grabbed leads after the first day of competion at their respective Northwest Conference Spring Classic Tournaments. The Pirate women (331) lead Puget Sound by six strokes and pre-tournament favorite by ten shots at Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima, Washington. Emily Travis is the tournament's individual leader after firing a 76 on Saturday. She holds a four-stroke lead over Sophie Carr of Linfield. Click here for Saturday's women's results. Whitworth also had a first round lead in the women's Fall Classic, but nationally-ranked George Fox made a strong surge on the second day to overtake the Pirates. Whitworth will try to avoid the same result in Sunday's second round. The other first round scores for the Pirate women: Liz Martin (83), Krystal Pitkonen (86), Emily Guthrie (86), Rachel Dubes (90), Mariesa Stombaugh (96). The team scores through the first round: Whitworth 331, Puget Sound 337, George Fox 341, Linfield 343, Pacific 361, Whitman 380, Pacific Lutheran 401, Willamette 457, Lewis & Clark incomplete. The Whitworth men (293) hold a seven-stroke edge over Puget Sound after Saturday's first round at The Links at Moses Pointe, and lead Linfield by 12 shots. Linfield was the NWC Fall Classic winner. Cameron Whittle shot a three-under 69 and is currently one shot behind Linfield's Tyler Nelson for the individual lead. Click here for Saturday's men's results.
