Whittle Leads Pirates to Victory

Cameron Whittle

MOSES LAKE, Wash. - The Whitworth University men's golf team put itself in position to make a legitimate run at the 2010 NWC championship by claiming the conference's Spring Classic on Sunday afternoon at the The Links at Moses Pointe. The Pirates outdistanced runner-up Linfield by 10 strokes behind the strong play of Cameron Whittle, who shot a 1-under 143 to tie atop the leaderboard.

The win earned Whitworth a tie with Linfield atop the NWC men's golf standings at 15 points each. Linfield had won the 2009 NWC Fall Classic, just ahead of Whitworth.

Whittle followed up his 69 on Saturday with a solid 74 on Sunday to shoot 143 and tie with Max Bonk of Pacific (Ore.) for lowest total. Bonk birdied the second playoff hole to earn medalist honors for the third year in a row.

Whitworth had four golfers finish among the top 12 players in the tournament. In addition to Whittle's tie for first, Jared Descoteaux (73-74 - 147) was fifth, Ryan Young (74-74 - 148) was sixth, and Christian Boudreau (77-77 - 154) tied for 12th. Jeff Aly (77-78 - 155) tied for 16th and Josh Kay (79-78 - 157) finished tied for 19th among 52 players.

The final team scores were: Whitworth 293-299 - 592; Linfield 305-297 - 602; Puget Sound 300-311 - 611; Pacific (Ore.) 308-307 - 615; Whitman 313-313 - 626; Pacific Lutheran 328-313 - 641; George Fox 320-322 - 642; Willamette 329-319 - 648; Lewis & Clark 358-338 - 696.

The 2010 NWC Championship tournament will be played at Heron Lakes GC in Portland, Oregon on April 24-25. That was the same site as the Fall Classic, where the Pirates finished second. Whitworth and Linfield hold a four-point lead over the rest of the conference, so the 2010 championship will likely come down to the Pirates and Wildcats.
