SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitworth golf teams appear ready to compete well at this weekend's Northwest Conference Spring Classic tournaments. This weekend's events count 25% toward the determination of the final 2009-10 NWC golf standings.

The women, who finished second at the 2009 NWC Fall Classic, will be playing at Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima, Washington on Saturday and Sunday. The Pirates are coming off of a 340 - 387 victory over Whitman on the same course last Saturday. The event had been scheduled as a "North" event, featuring all four conference schools from the state of Washington. But Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound were unable to cross the mountain passes in the midst of a strong spring storm.

Krystal Pitkonen and Emily Travis each shot 83 in blustery conditions to lead the Pirates. Mariesa Stombaugh was close behind with an 86, and Rachel Dubes had an 88 to round out the top four scores. Emily Guthrie shot 91 and Liz Martin had a 94 during the round.

The Whitworth men will be competing at Moses Pointe Golf Course in Moses Lake, Washington, also on Saturday and Sunday. The Pirates finished second at the Fall Classic and need another strong finish to remain in contention for the 2010 NWC title. Whitworth opened the spring with a solid showing at Moses Pointe on March 6th.

The Bucs also faced the Whitman men at Apple Tree this past Saturday, defeating the Missionaries 314 - 327 in the same windy and cold conditions as the men. Cameron Whittle had the best individual round of the day (76), followed by Jared Descoteaux and Josh Kay (both 78). Ryan Young was the fourth counting score (82). Christian Boudreau shot an 84 and Jeff Aly had an 89.
