YAKIMA, Wash. - The Whitworth women's golf team could not hold off the hard charge of 10th-ranked George Fox and finished second on Sunday at Apple Tree GC in the final round of the 2010 Northwest Conference Spring Classic.

The Pirate women led by seven strokes over Puget Sound and ten strokes over GFU. But the Bruins fired a 324 on Sunday to Whitworth's 341 and won by seven strokes.

Emily Travis, who shot 76 on Saturday to take the individual lead, slipped to an 86 on Sunday and finished one stroke behind Brianna Nap of GFU (161 - 162) to finish second in the individual medalist chase. She nearly joined her teammate, Emily Guthrie, as an NWC event champion after Guthrie claimed the 2009 Fall Classic medal.

Krystal Pitkonen (86-82 - 168) finished fifth overall, while Guthrie (86-84 - 170) tied for seventh. Liz Martin (83-89 - 172) tied for 12th place, Rachel Dubes (90-90 - 180) tied for 19th and Mariesa Stombaugh (96-92 - 188) tied for 26th overall.

The final team scores were: George Fox 341-324 - 665; Whitworth 331-341 - 672; Linfield 343-345 - 688; Puget Sound 337-357 - 694; Pacific (Ore.) 361-357 - 718; Whitman 380-388 - 768; Pacific Lutheran 401-386 - 787; Willamette 457-444 - 901; Lewis & Clark incomplete.

The 2010 NWC Spring Classic counts 25% toward the final conference golf standings. Whitworth sits in second place in the conference golf standings after finishing second to George Fox in both the Fall and Spring Classics. The Pirates still have a chance to catch the Bruins in the final standings if Whitworth can pull off a win in two weeks at the NWC Championship Tournament. The event will be held April 24-25 at Heron Lakes GC in Portland, the same location as last fall's classic.
