Pair of Freshmen Pace Pirates
PENDLETON, Ore. - The Whitworth University women battled through gusty conditions to finish second in the team standings at the Whitman College Women's Invitational this weekend. First-year players Emily Guthrie and Emily Travis paced the Pirates. Whitworth shot 339 as a team on the first day, only four strokes behind eventual winner George Fox. But the Pirates followed with a 346 on Sunday for a two-day total of 685. The final team scores were: George Fox 663, Whitworth 685, Pacific (Ore.) 733, Whitman 765, Lewis & Clark 850. Guthrie finished third individually with a score of 84-82 - 166, while Travis was fifth with a score of 84-85 - 169. Brianna Nap of George Fox was the medalist with a total of 76-81 - 157. Liz Martin finished with an 83-90 - 173 (7th) and Krystal Pitkonen carded an 88-89 - 177 (tie for 9th). Rachel Dubes finished 15th with a 91-96 - 187. There were 25 finishers in the tournament.
