Pirates Shut Out Augsburg 2-0
SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth scored a pair of goals in the final five minutes of the second half to defeat visiting Augsburg College in a non-conference men's soccer match on Sunday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field. The Pirates (1-0) won their first match of 2010, while the Augies fell to 1-1. It was the second meeting between the schools, the first since the first round of the 2008 NCAA Division III tournament when Augsburg advanced on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw. Whitworth outshot the Augies 9-1 in the first half, yet did not find the net until Nic Shaw scored in the 41st minute. After Augsburg could not clear the ball following a corner kick, Devin Merrill passed to a wide open Shaw in the middle of the box. The Pirates added a goal in the final 10 seconds of the period. Cameron Bushey found Justin Mikkola as time was ticking away. While the shot attempts were equal in the second half at 4-4, Augsburg made Whitworth keeper Kyle Novak only make one save to preserve the shutout. The Pirates finished with a 12-4 edge in total shots, 4-1 in shots on-goal. Will Morlock made two saves for the Augies. Play will continue on Monday as Augsburg plays Pacific Lutheran at 1:00 p.m. on Whitworth's Omache Field. The Pirates will take on UC Santa Cruz at 3:00 p.m. UCSC and PLU tied 2-2 in Sunday's late match. Go to Athletics Home Page > Men's Soccer > Sports Releases > |
