Pirates to Play Pair in Tacoma
SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth University heads west to play a pair of neutral site NCAA West Region contests at the University of Puget Sound. The Pirates will take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday afternoon, then play UC Santa Cruz on Sunday morning. Whitworth opened the season with a 2-1 loss to nationally-ranked Wheaton College. Sarah Berentson (Jr., Burlington, Wash.) tied the match for the Pirates by converting a penalty kick after Cory Druffel (Jr., Pullman, Wash.) was fouled in the box. But the winning score for Wheaton came on a penalty kick in the second half. The Pirates followed with a 1-0 loss to University of Dubuque in double overtime. Despite a 23-7 edge in shots, including a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal, the Spartans were able to score the winning goal with just over a minute left in the second overtime. The Opponents: Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the defending champion of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, has started impressively with wins over Westmont (1-0) and UC Santa Cruz (4-1). Lizzie Van Buskirk leads the Athenas with a goal and an assist this season. UC Santa Cruz, a traditional Division III power on the west coast, has stumbled to a surprising 0-3 record to start the season. In addition to their 4-1 loss at CMS, the Banana Slugs were beaten 3-0 at Cal Baptist and 1-0 at Pomona-Pitzer. UCSC handed Whitworth a 1-0 loss in Spokane last season. Host Puget Sound will be the fourth women's team competing this weekend. The Loggers will play UCSC on Friday and CMS on Sunday. Coming Up: Next week the Pirates will open Northwest Conference play with three matches. On Wednesday the Bucs will play Whitman at home (2:00 p.m.), then hit the road to play Pacific (Friday night) and George Fox (Sunday at noon).
