SPOKANE, Wash. -- The season has come full circle for the Whitworth College men's soccer team. The Pirates will face the University of Redlands in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III tournament on Saturday, the same squad Whitworth opened the 2005 season against in early September. The match will start at 1:00 pm.
Redlands is 17-2-2 this season after earning its fifth straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletics Conference title. Whitworth defeated Redlands 3-1 on September 3rd at a tournament hosted by Linfield College. Todd Sabrowski, Niko Varlamos and Ali Seyedali all scored for the Pirates. Fakema scored the Bulldogs' only goal. Whitworth is 16-1-1 and ranked fifth in the latest NSCAA/adidas Division III men's soccer poll. The Pirates won their second straight Northwest Conference title. Whitworth and Redlands also have a short post-season history. The teams met in the NCAA Division III West Region final in 2001 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Redlands won the match 1-0 in overtime on the way to an NCAA Division III runner up finish. Admission for Saturday's match is $5 for adults and $3 for students (with ID) and children. All seating is general admission. The gates will open at noon.
