SPOKANE, Wash.- Chris Johnson scored twice and Jonathan Carlson set up a pair of goals to lead fifth-ranked Whitworth College to a 4-0 win over the University of Redlands in a second round match of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.

Jon Carlson set up two Pirate goals

Playing without NWC Defensive Player of the Year Todd Sabrowski for the first time this season, the Pirates (17-1-1) jumped ahead by three goals in the first half and never let the Bulldogs (17-3-2) into the game. Sabrowski suffered a hip pointer in practice on Monday and will be day to day heading into next weekend.

Carlson set up Whitworth's first goal when he beat Redlands keeper Andrew Roraff to a ball just outside the left side of the box and fed to an open Chris Johnson in the middle. Johnson's shot beat a Bulldog defender into the bottom right corner for a 1-0 Whitworth lead at 21:04.

Ten minutes later Carlson dribbled past two defenders, was knocked down, got back up and recovered the ball at the top of the box and fed a wide open Niko Varlamos on the right side. Varlamos beat Roraff to the upper right corner for Whitworth's second goal.

Chris Johnson scored twice for Whitworth

Mathew Friesen made it 3-0 Whitworth at 37:39 when he intercepted a clear attempt by a Redlands defender and shot over Roraff from just outside the top of the box.

The final Pirate tally came at 60:17 when Evan Hendrickson passed over the Redlands defense to Johnson for a breakaway goal.

Whitworth outshot Redlands 16-12 and had an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks were even at 4-4. Kevin Bostock made four saves to earn the shutout in goal for the Pirates. Roraff finished with four saves for the Bulldogs.

Redlands came into the match having allowed only six goals all season and on an 11 match shutout streak. Including a 3-1 season opening game, Whitworth scored seven of the ten goals allowed by the Bulldogs this season.

Whitworth next opponent is unknown. Wartburg College (Iowa) is hosting St. Norbert (Wis.), Chicago and St. John's (Minn.) in a regional. Whitworth will play the winner of that regional next weekend in a sectional semifinal. The location of that sectional is still to be determined.
