SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Whitworth College men's soccer team is right about where the Northwest Conference coaches predicted in the preseason poll, but the 10th-ranked Pirates cannot take anything for granted as they head into the second half of the NWC schedule. Whitworth is 9-1-1 overall and 6-0-1 in the NWC. The Pirates are currently one point behind Linfield (7-3-3, 6-0-2) in the conference standings. But Whitworth will play two games this weekend, while the Wildcats will only play one. Also in the chase for the NWC title is Puget Sound (6-1-2, 5-1-1). The Bucs will host George Fox University on Saturday and Willamette University on Sunday, both scheduled to begin at 2:30 pm as the second half of doubleheaders with the women's teams.
The Pirates lead the league offensively, averaging a conference-best 2.53 goals per game and 1.82 assists per contest. Todd Sabrowski (Sr., D, Oregon City, Ore.), Chris Johnson (Sr., F, Spokane, Wash.) and Niko Varlamos (Jr., F, Edmonds, Wash.) have all scored five goals apiece for the Bucs. Ali Seyedali (Jr., MF, Kirkland, Wash.) leads the team in assists. Kevin Bostock (Jr., GK, Whitefish, Mont.) and Scott Barnum (Fr., GK, Fall City, Wash.) have split time in goal and the Pirates have a 1.05 team goals-against average. George Fox comes into the weekend 2-9 overall and 1-6 in the NWC. The Bruins were defeated at home by NWC contenders Linfield (4-1) and Puget Sound (2-0) last Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Ben Eichenberger leads GFU with three goals and one assist. In the teams' first meeting this season, Whitworth defeated George Fox 2-0 in Newberg, Oregon on September 18th. Willamette is 3-8 overall and also 1-6 in the NWC. The Bearcats fell 2-0 at home to PLU last Saturday and 2-1 at Pacific on Sunday. Donald Bressler is the team's leading scorer with three goals.
