McMINNVILLE, Ore. -- (From Linfield Sports Information Office) Nationally ranked Whitworth dealt Linfield its first defeat in 10 Northwest Conference men’s soccer matches this season, 2-1 on Saturday at Linfield.

Whitworth, the defending conference champion, boosted its record to 12-1-1 overall and 9-0-1 in the NWC with 28 championship points. Linfield fell to 7-4-4 and 6-1-3 with 21 points (3 points are awarded for each victory and 1 for each tie). Each has four conference matches left to play.

Whitworth was ranked sixth nationally and first in the West Region in NCAA Division III this week by the National Soccer Coaches Association. The Pirates lived up to their rankings.

Todd Sabrowski scored both Whitworth goals in the first half. The senior from Oregon City one-touched a cross from Skye Henderson from 16 yards on a line into the lower left corner 5:33 into the game.

Linfield’s Chris Paradis tied the score on a close-in header, off a free kick by Kevin Popich, in the 27th minute.

But 1:14 before halftime, a Whitworth player was tripped in the Linfield penalty box and Sabrowski drilled a penalty kick past Wildcat goalkeeper Grant Williams for a 2-1 lead.

Linfield pushed hard in the second half, taking 10 shots to Whitworth’s 3, but only four were on goal.

For the game, Linfield took 15 shots to Whitworth’s 12. Whitworth put eight on goal, however. Wildcat keeper Williams made six saves, two of which in the first half drew gasps of appreciation from the large Homecoming crowd. Whitworth's Kevin Bostock made six saves as well for the Pirates.

Mounting a desperate attack in the final 5 minutes, Linfield’s Jason Wong was high from close and Josh Robinson was high after a good cross from Paradis. Linfield’s last chance died when a 40-yard free kick by Popich sailed over the net with 1:29 left to play.

The Pirates continue their Oregon road trip with a Northwest Conference match at Pacific University on Sunday afternoon. Linfield will host Whitman College, also on Sunday.
