Complete box score and play by play FOREST GROVE , Ore. -- (From Pacific Sports Information Office) A flurry of four Whitworth goals in the final 10 minutes turned an otherwise close match into a rout Sunday as the Pirates handed Pacific a 7-2 loss in Northwest Conference men's soccer action at Tom Reynolds Field. The Boxers (2-13-0, 1-10-0 NWC) showed for the first 80 minutes that they could play with the Pirates (13-1-1, 10-0-1 NWC), ranked sixth in the latest NSCAA/Adidas Division III Top 25 Poll. Both sides played to a 1-1 halftime deadlock and the Boxers were still in it until the Pirates unloaded for four goals in the final 10 minutes.
Niko Varlamos scored a hat trick for the Pirates, Brett Kagawa connected twice and Ali Seyedali earned four assists as the Pirates scored most of their goals off set plays. Varlamos started things out for the Pirates in the 24th minute, finding a Seyedali pass from the right side and chipped it in from close range. The Boxers, however, scored on Pirates' goalkeeper Kevin Bostock for only the sixth time this season when Danny Williams buried Derek Atta's corner kick in the 40th minute. Whitworth outshot Pacific by a slim 7-5 margin at halftime. Varlamos put Whitworth ahead just two minutes into the second half, connecting off Seyedali's right side corner kick. Two minutes later, it was Kagawa connecting off a Seyedali corner kick, this time from the left side, for a 3-1 Pirates' lead. After 30 minutes of defensive minded soccer, it was Atta who put new energy into the Boxers, scoring his second goal of the season in the 80th minute off a 20-yard attempt and brought the Boxers to within one, 3-2. It was the set play, however, the started Whitworth's final barrage when Kagawa scored for the second time off a Seyedali right side corner kick in the 83rd for a 4-2 lead. From there, the Boxers' defense looked like Swiss cheese. Varlamos connected on a short chip shot at the 84 minute mark. Jonathan Carlson then caught Pacific goalie Jory Shene out of position on the left side in the 85th minute. Then, with 22 seconds remaining, Evan Hendrickson found an easy chip shot from seven yards out to register the final tally. Shene made 11 saves in the loss as the Boxers dropped their fourth straight match. Bostock made four saves in the victory, but the two goals by the Boxers were the most scored on the junior by one team this season. Whitworth outshot the Boxers 27-11, but corner kicks ended up even at five apiece. The Boxers will play their final three matches of the season on the road, returning to action next Saturday at George Fox. Whitworth will play two of their final three matches at home, hosting Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran next weekend. Go to Athletics Home Page > Men's Soccer > Sports Releases > |
