Sixth-ranked Whitworth defeats Pacific Lutheran 3-1

SPOKANE, Wash.- (From Scott Churchill, Whitworth SID Intern) Whitworth College (13-1-1, 11-0-1 NWC) edged closer to a Northwest Conference title by defeating Pacific Lutheran (10-7, 6-5 NWC) 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.

The Pirates were hungry early as Todd Sabrowski scored his ninth goal of the season at the 2:36 mark. The pass came from Jon Carlson who passed it up the left side where Sabrowski would drive it in the right side of the net.

Ali Seyedali had a goal and assist for the Bucs

Ali Seyedali put in his fifth goal of the season off a free kick at 23:53, making the Pirate lead 2-0. Seyedali's shot deflected off a Lute defender, leaving PLU keeper Jared Harmon no chance of making the save.

Whitworth's third and final goal came at 67:06 by Evan Hendrickson. Hendrickson's shot came off a flick by Sean Lambrecht on a cross from Ali Seyedali, both tallying an assist.

Andrew Croft headed in Pacific Lutheran's only goal of the game at 87:02. The goal came off a corner kick by Justin Stevens on the right side.

PLU had an advantage in shots (16) and corner kicks (10) over the Pirates who had 12 shots and seven corner kicks.

Pacific Lutheran will visit Whitman tomorrow at 1:30 pm while Whitworth will try to clinch the NWC title against the Puget Sound Loggers, also at 1:30 pm.
