Whitworth defeats Whitman 3-1

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitworth men (9-1-1, 6-0-1 NWC) continue their winning ways by defeating the Whitman Missionaries (4-7, 3-4 NWC) 3-1 on Friday afternoon at the Whitworth soccer field.

Skye Henderson tallied his third goal of the season when Jon Carlson headed a cross from Sean Lambrecht into the box at 13:30.

At 30:38, Chris Johnson flicked in a pass from Ali Seyedali into the left side of the net for his fifth goal of the season, putting the Pirates up 2-0.

Only a few minutes after at 35:30, Whitman came back with a goal of their own. Craig Yuen fired a free kick from the right side of the box into the goal to bring the Missionaries within one, making the score 2-1.

Not until the second half at 67:37 did the Pirates score their third and final goal. Todd Sabrowski blasted in a cross from the left side by Ali Seyedali for his fifth goal of the season.

Whitworth had 22 shots compared to only 11 by the Missionaries. Whitman's keeper, Brett Axelrod, finished the game with six saves. Pirate keeper Scott Barnum did not tally a save as the only Whitman shot on goal went in the back of the net.

Whitman continues play tomorrow at 2:30 against the Pioneers of Lewis & Clark College. Then on Sunday, the Pioneers travel to Whitworth where they will again play at 2:30.
