Whitworth Selected to Host NCAA Soccer Sectionals

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Whitworth College has been selected to host one of the four sectionals of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer tournament this coming weekend. The dates, either Friday and Saturday or Saturday and Sunday, will be determined after a conference call on Monday morning.

Nearly every region of the country will be represented in the sectional. Whitworth enters as the champion of the Northwest Conference with a record of 17-1-1. The Pirates were ranked fifth in the latest NSCAA/adidas Division III soccer poll. Whitworth advanced to the sectionals with a 4-0 win over the University of Redlands in Saturday's second round contest. The Pirates had a first round bye.

Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas is the champion of the Southern Collegiate Athletics Conference. The Tigers are 18-1-1 and ranked 4th in the latest poll. Trinity defeated Hardin-Simmons (Texas) 3-2 in the first round and Webster (Mo.) 3-0 in the second round. They played both matches at home.

Stevens Institute of Technology won its regional, which was hosted by Salisbury (Md.). The Ducks defeated Eastern College 1-0 in the first round before beating the host Seagulls 1-0 in the second round. Stevens Institute is part of the Skyline Conference and is located in Hoboken, New Jersey. The Ducks are 16-3-2 and ranked 21st in the latest poll

Wartburg College of Waverly, Iowa won its regional on its home field. The Knights defeated St. Norbert 6-1 in the first round and advanced over University of Chicago after winning a shootout 4-2. Wartburg won the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletics Conference and comes into the sectional with a 18-3-1 record. The Knights were not ranked in the latest poll.

Whitworth will play Wartburg in one match, while Stevens Institute meets Trinity in another match. Admission for each day of the sectional will be $6 for adults and $3 for students (with I.D.) and children.

The winner of each of the four sectionals advances to the Division III Soccer Finals in Greensboro, North Carolina the weekend of November 25-26.
