SPOKANE, Wash. -- Washington teams got the best of the visiting teams as Whitworth defeated St. Thomas 3-2, and Simon Fraser suffered its first loss of the year as the Lutes of Pacific Lutheran edged them out in double overtime 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Men's Soccer Invitational. Whitworth (3-0, 0-0 NWC) came out firing in the first half, out shooting the St. Thomas Tommies (1-1) 14-3. The first Pirate goal came 20 minutes into the game off a free kick by Todd Sabrowski. Whitworth's second goal, which came a minute later, was headed in by Niko Varlamos off a cross from the right side by Evan Hendrickson. St. Thomas pulled within one by halftime when Adam Michalik blasted the ball in the goal as it crossed to the left side of the keeper box. The Tommies helped out the Pirates by scoring an own goal off a Whitworth corner kick, increasing Whitworth's lead to 3-1 with 32 minutes left in regulation. St. Thomas went looking for a goal of their own and found it in Vanjelis Ngwa as he kicked in a rebound off the crossbar to make the score 3-2 at 60:34. In the second game of the day, the Pacific Lutheran Lutes (3-1, 0-0 NWC) took the advantage 22:36 into the game. Mike Ferguson flicked a throw in by Derek Karamatic to Kevin Murray who scored the goal, putting the Lutes up 1-0. Simon Fraser (5-1) out shot the Lutes 21-8, but scored their first and only goal with 3:46 remaining in regulation. Andrew Corazza, SFU's all-time leading scorer, tied the match on an assist from Vincent Stewart. Neither team converted any scoring opportunities in the first overtime, but Pacific Lutheran quickly capitalized in the second overtime, scoring a goal within 11 seconds. Brennan Brown stole a pass from a Clan defender 15 feet outside the keeper box and fired it in the right side of the goal to win the game.
