Whitworth Men's Soccer Invitational Day 2
September 11, 2005

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Today's winners were yesterday's losers at the Whitworth College men's soccer Invitational on Sunday afternoon, as Simon Fraser University and the University of St. Thomas bounced back from losses on the first day of the tournament to post wins today. Simon Fraser won 4-3 in overtime against the host Pirates, while UST nipped Pacific Lutheran University 2-1.

Andrew Corazza scored the first and last goal of the match to lead the Clan (6-1) past Whitworth (3-1), handing the Pirates their first loss of the season.

Whitworth got on the board first when Niko Varlamos was fouled in the box and converted a penalty kick only 4:11 into the match. Corazza answered quickly, taking a feed from Vincent Stewart before beating Pirate keeper Kevin Bostock to tie the match at 6:45.

Stewart then scored on his own penalty kick shortly before halftime, giving the Clan a 2-1 lead at 41:58.

Whitworth came out of the locker room with new intensity scoring twice within the first ten minutes of the second half. Chris Johnson picked up a loose ball at the top of the box and shot over SFU keeper Thomas Lindley to tie the contest at 51:33. Exactly two minutes later Lindley made a diving save on a left angle shot from Johnson, but the ball went straight to Skye Henderson who put back the attempt into the empty net for a 3-2 Whitworth lead at 53:33.

Brendan Stabeno pulled the Clan back even when he headed in a corner kick by Corazza at 63:31.

Corazza's created his own match-winning goal in overtime. He was the first one to a loose ball on the left side of the Whitworth goal line, just outside the box. He was able to loft the shot over Bostock and just inside the far post to secure the sudden death victory.

The Clan outshot the Pirates 18-15, but Whitworth had the edge in shots on goal 11-7. Lindley made eight saves for SFU, while Bostock made three for the Pirates. The physical contest included a red card for each team and four other yellows.

SFU's win gave Pacific Lutheran a chance to win the tournament outright. A win or tie against St. Thomas would give the Lutes the best record in the invitational. But the Tommies spoiled PLU's plans.

Jeremy Pope fed Andy Gikling, who broke free behind the PLU defense to score the match's first goal at 8:45. Erik Gracey tied it for the Lutes just before halftime, taking a pass from Justin Stevens and beating UST keeper Matt Carlson at 42:42.

The Tommies (2-1) scored the winning goal when Vanjelis Ngwa crossed to Joe Voeller, who elevated to whip in a shot from point blank range at 59:01 of the second half.

PLU (3-2) pressed the action late, and a headed ball with less than 20 seconds to play bounced off of the left post, preventing the Lutes from tying the match.

PLU outshot St. Thomas 16-13 and had a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Carlson made four saves for the Tommies. Harmon made one save for PLU.
