Complete box score and play by play SPOKANE, Wash. - Tight defense was the only winner in Sunday afternoon's 1-1 Northwest Conference men's soccer tie between visiting Linfield College and 12th-ranked Whitworth College.
Whitworth (6-1-1 overall, 3-0-1 NWC) limited Linfield (3-3-3, 2-0-2) to only seven shots, three of which were on goal, while Linfield limited the NWC's most aggressive offense to only 12 shots, also three of which were on goal. The Pirates came into the match averaging over 24 shots per contest. The Wildcats looked like they had a shot at an upset when Mike Grabast passed forward to Chris Paradis for a breakaway goal in the 55th minute. It was Paradis' team-leading third goal of the year. Whitworth countered at 65:48. After a Pirate corner kick, a long shot by Ben Dixon created a scramble in front of the net, and Jon Carlson was there to put in the goal, his third of the year. The Pirates were the only team to put a shot on goal in either of the overtimes, but Grant Williams made a save on Ali Seyedali's attempt from a hard right angle in the first extra period. Williams and Whitworth keeper Kevin Bostock each only had to make a pair of saves in the match. The Pirates will return to action next weekend when they play at Puget Sound on Saturday and at Pacific Lutheran on Sunday. Linfield returns home to host Willamette on October 1st.
